Fruit Going to Waste.
Higher wages and stricter eo^^ons of labour in the fruitgrowing districts of Contral Otago will this year resuit in a huge waste of apples which have in the past generally found their way to Dunedin orphanages, the Returned Soldiers' Association, and similar organisations. An orchardist in the Ettrick district showed a Daily Times reporter the other day a striking instance of the waste that has to be countenanced on account of the difficulty of gathering fruit. No fewer than 1000 cases of apples will have to fall and rot because the grower cannot afford to pay pickers 1/8 per hour to harvest the crop for charitable orgamsations, and even if he could the labour is not available. It is taking growers in the Roxburgh-Teviot fruitgrowing areas all their time to fill export ullocations as they are made. f
