Mr. Lajos Steiner, chess ohampion. oi Hungary and winner of the recent Au»r tralian chess ehampionship tourney, met 13 Gisborne chess players lasi night in simultaiieous play, The movy ing throughout was very rapid, tha playing time totalling 1 Hour 50 min« utes. Fifteen games were played, ai two opponents played twice, being de* feated each time. Mr. Steiner won 14 games and lost one, being defeated by the club captain, Mr- C. P., Belton, who, following a very bteady start, gained an advantage in the end game* Mr. Belton has not long been in Gis*

borne, and at present holds the Hamil* ton Club7s title, Mr. Steiner subse* quently told those present that' thia opponent played very precisely, forcing a mate in five moves by a very pretty manoeuvre. xn conversation aiter the games Mr. Steiner mentioned that he epeaks, in addition to his native Hungarian, German and English, and has also a* working knowledge of Eusslau and . French. Mr. Steiner said he was unaware that New Zealand had a native race untii , he reached Australia and the beautiful carvings df Poho-o-Rawiri in Gisborne had aroused his greatest enthusiasm. Mr. Steiner will give simultaneous exhibitions in Napier and Hastings over the week-end and also a lecture ou the game at Napier.
