GISBORNE, This Day. As ihe result of a fire in the Waiapu Farmers' Trading Oo's, etore at Te Araroa early yesterday morning ihe building was destroyed and , among its contents waa ihe valuahle Ahuwhenua Uup, ihe siiver trcphy pfesented by Lord Bledialoe, a former GovernorGeneral of Kew Zealand, to encourage competition among Maori farmers. The cup wag won in ihe 1936 competition by Mr Henry Dewes, a member of the Ngatiporou tribe, and waa presented to ihe winner jby Lord Galway at a funetion at Tikitiki early thia month, The trophy was entruated to the Waiapu ifarlner&, Trading Co's. management for aafe keeping. The manager of the store, Mr G. Pepere, was aroused at 3 o'clock yesterday morning with news of the fire, and hastening to the scene, found the building a mass of fiames, . He inado an effort to enter in order to obtain the Ahuwhenua Cup, biit the heavy smoke drov© him back. Mr Pepere then procured an overcoat, and with thia over bis head, made another attempt accompanied by Constable Strawbridge, but this also was ifi vain, and a little Iater the whole building was burned.
