, Borough to Prep^ra The Area REM0VAL OF BUILDINGS It is the intention of the Hastings Borough Council to pi'oceed with the preliminary work and prepare the area to be developed later as a Oivic Square. it is proposed to level off the area and have it in readiness xfor the carryingout of a plan of development. In making this announceinehb this morning the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, said that dux'ing his recent visit to the South Island he had had 1 opportunity of speaking to the Dii' tor of ToWn Planning, Mr R. B. Hammond, who was prepafing a plan for the lay-out of the Civic Sqtiare, ahd was assured that the plans Would be available for consideration of the council at an early date after Eastdr. Mr Maddison mentioned that the council had inspected the block of land early this week and had carefully con sidered the question of the remCval of the buildings on the section recehtly procured. It was eventiialiy deoided tb dispose of the buildings by tender's, "After their removal the area will be cleared," said Mr Maddison, "ahd the whole block will be levelled off and generally prepared in antioipation of layins-out the area as a Civio Sqdftre. The extent of the expenditur© on this Work • will be in aecordance with the position of the finances of the borougjj and the development WCrk will be ecnsidered when the estimates are being prepared during the next few weeka for the current year." Mr Maddison mentioned that recently the Hamilton Borough Council had placed a £68,000 loan proposal before the Local Bodies Loans Board and te-1 ceived that body's sanction for a comprehensive civio development scheme. Mr Maddison had taken the opportunity of seeing the Mayor df Hamilton dtiring the recent Mtlflxcipal Conference and had been pfoinised an outIihe and particulars of the Hamilton proposals. "But don't think that we are contemplating spending £68,000 on civic development," added Mr Maddison With a smile.
