The Running at Pahiatua
• (By
A number of horses from Hawke'sBay made the trip to Pahiatua last week-end but, contrary to expectations, did not perform nearly as well as their previous public or private form suggested. The going at Pahiatua was, perhaps, the reason, for it was greasy, and horses from these dry parts could not handle it at all, • « » Parry was made favourite in. the maiden event, but any winning chanco he had was spoilt when Blue Mauritius fell in front of him. This gelding suffered slight injury, which caused him to be scratched the second day, and although he is on the improve since Teturning home, it is doubtful if he will be able to keep engagements at Waipukurau, This is hard luck for . his owner-trainer, who had the Lord Quex gelding in particularly fine fettle. • • • The Waipukurau-owned filly Gaelic Song, by Hunting Song from Piuthair, opened her winning account at this fixture, and on the second day beat all but Sporting Gift. This filly was bitoken iu by trainer B. McKay, but he was unfortunate enot v\ 'not to be in charge of her on aecount of meeting with an accident, so that for the present Gaelic Song is in the stable presided Over by A. Dods at Waipukurau. This filly is one to keep an eye on in immediate engagements. • * • Seyfried was unfortunate in losing second money and dividend the first day through slight interference. On Saturday he had little diffieulty in winning to pay over the IV. mark. The trip and racing has further improved this Siegfried three-year-old gelding, so that he should be a better horse ne:: h Saturday at Tauherenikau. • * • Hanarin, as at Napier Park, raced below expectations, and it is difiicult to account for her recent poor showings, as she is in excellent racing fettle. • • * Royal Solo was started twice but never flattered. This mare appears unable to strilce her best form. She will raee at Tauherenikau over Easter, and then be brought back to the Dannevirke meeting, which is to be held at Waipukurau on the Saturday following Easter. ^ * * * Werohia, on his running, has slipped from what he was twelve months back, as then he was' a grade better than what he was opposed to last week-end. His stable companion, Curie, was third on Saturday to run a very fair race; and should he get a wet track in the next week, this old fellow looks like pieking up a minor- race. • * •
The Clive two-year-old, Money Baid, rau a second and first. The first she met in Gay Molly one a little too good under the track conditions. On Saturday she looked ari easy wlnner at the distance, but Laughing Chief came with a great run and fully extended her. • • * Lucullus Lad has trained ofi? slightly on account of continued Tacing this season. His form was nowhere near what he is really' capable of, but it is doubtful if he will be baek to form by Waipukurau next Monday. * • * Hunter 's Morn, as usual, was not the best behaved at the barrier, but he suffered little iu consequence at the actual start. A second and third were his best efforts, but back to a firm track this wayward gelding should take all sorts of beating. # * » Gironde was never going like a winner, despite the fact that he was made a solid favourite. The going greatly hampered lxim, and his supporters wiil forget this unplaced performance when he goes out to contest the hack sprint at Wairarapa on Saturday. * » * Another of the "locals" that was making heavy work of it all the way was Master Cyklon, and he could not handle the greasy track at all. He is in capital nick, and should in the immediate future reveal that Pahiatua form, as far as he was concerned, was no guide at all. • • • Lavina was third and fourth, but her form is not np to what she is capable of. It is mystifying the poor races this mare has raced this last four starts, as she looks as fit as a fiddle. Maybe it is only a temporary lapse. She was to have gone on to Wairarapa, but now Waipukurau may be decided on instead. • • • Sansfoy was not produced either days at Pahiatua, but the Hastings gelding is in the best of health and condition to take on the Wairarapa trip. • • * Winitangi, who figures in tho maiden event at Waipukurau, is a three-year-old filly by Tractor— -Ecilia. She figured in the race book at Napier Park as Triutaph, bat did not start.
