PLANTATION AT CAPE

Sbortage of Funds Hampering Improvements BOARD'S PROFOSALS Shortag© of the necessary funds is hampering the work of providing a piantation at Cape Kidnappers around the area occupied by the hut and Watertanks, but it is hoped that the pianting of trees there will be able to proceed in June. It is proposed that after the necessary wire-netting rabbit protection has been placed" in position boys from the Napier Boys' High ^ehool shcrnld assist in breaking tip the ground in readiness for plantingj The young trees will then be tfafisported to the Cape by launch, and & working bee will spehd the day at the work of planting: them. The Cape Kidnappers Gannet S&notuary Board finished last year with a deficit, and although this amount has now been reduced by funds from the collection boxes at the Cape there is not sufficient money available to buy the trees and wire-netting requil-ed. It is hoped, however, that an offer Will be made to donate the material required, in whieh case no difficulty should be found- regarding iabour. The area to be pianted is a short distance from the path which ieaves the beach on the climb to the sanctuary, and about half a mile from the sanctuary itself. It sufrounds the shelter hut which was ereoted some time ago, and jt is proposed that thre© sides of the rectangular enciosure, one rood 23 perches in area, Bhall be skirted with a taupata hedge, and the remaining or northern side with a wihd break of marcrocarpa trees. Trees still needed ar© 60 two-year marcrocarpas, 40 caprosmas, of taupatas, and 40 cressifoliums or karo trees. The board has already a numbet of small shrubs which it is proposed to plant behind the sheltering marcrocarpas, and stirrounding the hut, to provide shade for th© water-tanks. To transport the youhg trees along the beach would mean that they would inevitably be damaged in the process, and it is therefore proposed to obtain the use of a launch with Which to carry the trees and equipment to the hut. Planting will b6 done as far as possibie on the day the trees atrive.
