SOCIAL ASPECT OF PUKETAPU SPORTS DAY
The annltal Puketapu sports were held on Shtur.day affernoon, very warm weather prevaiiing with later iu the afternoon, a delightful cooi breezo. Olose on 300 cars were parked on the ground and the attendance was very aatisfactory. Une noticed this year that very few Children were present, The club's grounde are ideaily situat§d and" the green background of low hifls foruis a natural grandstand. The function is weli organised and a great deai goes on at one time. fcjocialiy, these sports increase yearly in importancej many eountry visitors malie a day of it and picnic on the grounds. A little visitmg between cars, a oup of tea and chat are enjoyed between events and for those who require it the club authorities provide boinng water. Fa&cinating ho'rse events, cycle and athletic evems, polo competitions, Highland dancmg and the unforgettabie dfexterity of the wood-ciioppers and, for tho fariher, dog trials aii made up a splendi.d programme. Ali items were announced tnxough the iNapier Athletic Club's sound system lent for the oceasion. Worthy of mention was the pipe playing by the Port Ahuriri band of the Caiedunian Society, who made their iirst public appearance at these sports.
