SISTER'S RESIGNATION

To Take Effect as From Monday NO WORD FROM MINISTER "Unless we hear something from the Minister of Health before Monday, Sister Wood's resignation will take effect," said the Mayor of Napier, Mr U. O. Morse, also a ineniber of the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board, this morning, when referring to a request made to the Minister t° batfe Sister Wood reinstated on the nursing staff of the Napier Hospital pending the hndings of a further inquiry into hospital matters. It will be remembered that, consequent upon the investigations of a special committee of the Hospital Board into an outbreak of disease in Shrimpton Ward last year, and other matters relating to the Napier Hospital, the board requested Sister Wood's resignation within a month. That month expires on Monday. As Mayor of Napier, Mr Morse, by request from all people interested, approached the Minister of Health through the Hon. W. E. Barnard, a few days ago with a view to retaining the services of the sister until after the next inquiry had finished its investigations, "On making inquixies at Wellington by 'phone this morning, I find that no decision has yet been reached by the Minister, and personally I think it liighly improbable that he will in any way use his infiuence to favour either side at this juncture," said Mr Morse. "It seems fairly definite that since the board has at last considered it advisable to ask for an inquiry, that inquiry will be undertaken under the guidance of the magistrate at a very early date. Unless we hear something before Monday, Sister Wood's resignation will take effect, "Terrible indictments have been made against the board by one of its members," he added, "and if the services of Sister Wood are retained after the next inquiry has been held, any further indictments to be made must be most unpleasant."
