CHRISTCHURCH, Last JNight. The seleetion of Dr. J. E. Holloway, lecturer in botany at Otago University, as a fellow of the Royal Society, was, because of the circumstances in which it occurred, an even higher honour than u'sual.- There were 156 candidates proposed for election and 17 selections were made. Of the 156 candidates proposed 31 wfire being proposed for the first time. Many of the others had been up for several years, and one had been a candidate for 14 years. Dr. Holloway was among the 31 proposed for the first time. Dr. Holloway is the fourth New Zea-and-born fellow of the Royal Society. The others are Lord Rutherford (elected in 1903), Dr. J. W. Mellot (1929), and Dr. A. C. Aitken (1936). Dr. Holloway, who was born in Christehudch in 1881, was educated at Nelson College and Auckland University College. He took his theological degree some years before he passed the doctorate of science in 1919. He entered the church in 1907 and later was at Wanganui. After a visit to England in 1909, he was vicar of Oxford. After being at Hokitika and Leeston, he became lecturer in botany at the University of ' Otago in 1924, since when he has written many botanieal papers. There are now in New Zealand three fellows of the Royal Society, Dr. Holloway, Dr. C. Coleridge Farr and Dr. W. B. Benham. I ■
