T.B. TREATMENT
Facilities in Southland (By Telegraph— Press Association.) \ INVERCAEGILL, Last Night. A strong objection to the re-opening of the tuberculosis pavilion at the Kew Hospital was made by Mr. W. M. Norman at the monthly meeting of the Southland Hospital Board to-day. To xe-open the pavilion would be a ■terrible mistake, he said, and he was idetermined to vote against such a move. j "The time has arrived when we jshould build an institution of our own," •Mr. Norman said. "It has been said •that the Queenstown people would ob;ject to an institution being established [there, but I have discussod the matter jWith prominent citizens of Queenstown, and I am informed that there would be. ino objection to such a step beiug taken. IWealthy people who sufEer from tuberculosis go to live in Queenstown and do iwell; why should not poor people have jthe same advantagesf" The chairman (Mr. T. Golden) said ithat the Kew institution had been iclosed because there were not sufficient ipatients going there to warrant it being Ikept open. He would admit that Kew ,was not in his opinion a suitable place 'to send tubercular patients, but Mr. Norman was opening up a big question When he suggested sending them xo {Queenstown. Mr. Norman: Whatever you say, it. all comes down to this — Send the patients away to a better climate and they improve. Send them to Kew and they go back in condition. . The meeting went into committee to hear Dr. J. A. Pottinger's views on the isubject. The deeision reached during the discussion in committee was not confirmed iin open board, the chairman remarking: "There was no business done. We had ja very interesting discussion."
