Auckland Decision to Build Sanatorium EFFECT ON PUREORA
(Fron
WAIPUKURAU, This Day. The decision, of the Auckland Hosl pital Board to proceed with the erection of a tubereulosis sanatorium at Bombay Hills, near Pukekohe, may have an effect on the Waipawa Hospital Board, which controls the Pukeora Sanatorium at Waipukurau, as at present the Auckland Board provides a big percentage of the patients under treatment at Pukeora. The two tubereulosis sanatoria in the North Island are the Otaki and Pukeora institutions, administered by the Manawatu and Waipawa Hospital Boards respectively, Otaki being for female patients and Pukeora principally for males. If the Auckland Board 's decision to build is proceeded with, it is anticipat' ed that cthe Auckland patients will no longer be sent to Pukeora, and the Waipawa Hospital Board will, other things being equal, suffer, a diminution in the number of patients, and the cost per occupied bed will consequently increase in proportion. Waikato Hospital Board patients will possibly be sent to the Auckland Sanatorium, and this would mean a further reduction of the numbera at Waipukurau. As the f ollowing figures will show, the Auckland and Waikato Boards provide a' big proportion of the nuoiber of tubereulosis patients .under treatment at Pukeora; — From Auckland 36, Wellington 43, J Pensio'ns Dept. 7, Waiapu 1, Waikato 5, Wairarapa 4, Palmerston Horth 7, Cook 3, Taranaki 5, Patea 1, Hawke's Bay 4, Wairoa 1, ^Wanganui 2, Waipawa 1, Thames 1, Hawera 1, and Dannevirke 1. Total, 123. Of this number, 41 are from the Auckland and Waikato Boards, equivalent to one-third of the occupied beds.
