Company S&cures Contract for 208 NO LACK OF TENDERS

f WELLINGTON, Last Night. Most of the contracts, for the erectioi of the houses for the State° Houain^ Department in the Orakei block in Auckland have been secured by tht Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd., whose t'enders were substantially lower than nearest to them under separate contracts. The company will build, no fewer than 208, out of the total of 212 ; houses for which competitive tenders jwere called. The savings to the Statu [in respeet of 178 houses in two iarge [contracts will he £99 per house. The j company has also obtained a lease oi jthe State's new joinery factory at Penjrose, near Auckland, bnt the rental has !not yet been disclos'ed. The Prime Minister announcefl thii ; evening than 109 tenders were received !for 36 contracts for houses in the Ora•kei scheme. "Two large contracts, comprising 91 and 87 houses respectively, will - be awarded to the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd.," said Mr. Savage. ' "Of the ;remaining .34 contracts, each of one ; house, 30 will be awarded to the Fletcher Company, as that firm was the lowest tendergr by a substantial marghi in each case. Consideration of the tenders for the remainder is not yet complete, as there are certain discrepancies in the tenders submitted by some contractors, which require to be cleared up.
