A CHESS TREAT

.Visit of Lajos Steiner (By ' ' Francixetto ' ') Chess enthusiasts in Hawke's Bay will have a rare treat over the Eaater holidays with the visit of Lajos Steiner, the finest chess player who has ever vMted this part of the world. What an auspicious opening oi the seasont Mr Steiner will arrive in Napier from Gisborne on Good Friday, and the tentative prpgramme at present is for him to give a simultaneous exhibition in Napier on Saturday, a simultaneous exhibifcion. in Hastings on Monday evening, and a lecture in Napier on Tuesday evening. An invitation to be present and to participate is extended to all playens and followers of the game (not 'necessarily members of clubs), but it is asked that those who can come would please communicate with a rnember pf the committee of the Hastings or" of the Napier club. Lajos Steiner is the present champion of Hungary, and is numbered amongst the twenty best players in the world. He has a good command of English (he would need to have to be able to give a lecture), and those who have come into contact with him speak in highest terms of his sportsmanship. Steiner has just come from Australia where he won the Australian championeliip with a possible score of 13 points, 3J points ahead of Purdy (who was here two years ago) and three others who tied for second place. He will arrive in New Zealand on March 22, and is due.to broacast the same evening, his subject being "The Chess Mind." Steiner was a qualified engineer, but he gave up ©ngineering six years ago to heeome a professiohal chess player. Chess is not the only game that he can play, for he also takes part in tennis, xowing, swimming and even wrestling. To .save ©xpense to the clubs concerned he is willing to he billetted during his tour. I appeal to all players to show appreciation of his . visit by turning out in fnll force. Remember too, that to win against him, even in simultaneous play, is a great honour. The exact programme will ,be advertised later.
