Quality Lacking
STORTFORD CATTLE Prime Beef in Brisk Demand C0WS MAKE TO £8 107' Quality was greatly lacking in the yarding of 200 head of fat cattle at Stortford Lodge to-day. The sale was dull and the selling slow for unfinished lines, but when quality lots appeared the market quickly brightened with the bidding being animated. Butchers showed from the outset that they were not in the market for unfinished lots not showing quality. The sale opened with several lines being little Better than store quality, j which would require paddocking) for some time before they would kill at butchers' quality. Passings were frequent for plain lots of cows making freezing schedule rates, which vendors were not prepared to accept. Prime ox beef was in demand, making values on a par with late offerjngs. The extra heavy entries were large boned and plain finished. Prime quality was confined to a few mediumweight and very young entries, which made to 32/6 per lOOlbs. A few pens of very prime heifers making choice young beef made to £9 5/- or to -28/- per lOOlbs. The top lines of heavy cows made to £8 10/-. Good medium weights brought to £7 15/-, while light and unfinished were difficult to trade to £6 5/-, some being passed out not to solicit even solitary bids. The heavy yarding a fortnight ago of quality lines enabled butchers tq stock up with the result that they were not obliged to enter to-day' s market for lines that were not well done.
