TRAFFIC PROBLEM

Safety Zone Lines Being Repainted SCHEME TO eONTINUE "" t A start was made yesterday with the i repainting of the white lines marking ( out the pedestrian traffic safety zones in Heretaunga street and other parts £ of the borough, more especially in the c vicinity of the schools. _ ^ The question as to whether it was j the intention of the Hastings Borough j Council to keep on with the scheme, . which was introdnced in Hastings shortly before Christmas, was referred to the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, yesterday and an assurance that the scheme was to be persevered with was . given. . ! Mr. Maddison pointed out that since the scheme was first instituted in Hastings there had been a change oi inspectors, and it was for this reason that the required attention to the j lines had not been given. "It should be distinctly noted by pedestrians, however, that the zones are not waiting places," he said, "Pedestrians must cross them as expeditiously as possible; and must not stop in the middle o'f the street and so hold^up ( vehieular traffic." Mr. Maddison mentioned that while absent from Hastings attending the Municipal Conference at Timaru, he made a point of observing the methods adopted by various city and borough councils to exercise control of traffic in their partieular areas. He noted with interest that in Wellington there were a number of specia.1 signals which automatically controlled traffic during the busy hours; the work performed by the signals being in the n'ature of point duty. Tn some centres, too, he pointed out, the authorities concerned were endeavouring to educate both the pedestrian and the motorist in various aspects of traffic control and traffic matters generally by means of loud speakers. At Timaru, where a similar problem exists to that experienced in Heretaunga street on busy nights, the council debarred parking of vehieles in the main business sEopping area betweed the hours of 7 and 9 on the late night.
