A. Maddison, and upon receipt ot this he intenda to call a meeting of the special oommittee set up recentiy to control the free supply of milk to. A schools in Hastings. Mr. Maddison, who returned yesterday from the annual Municipal Conference at Timaru, informed a HeraldTribune representative this morning that while in Wellington he interviewed Mr. Picot, Director of Intefnal Market- % ing of Dairy and Allied Produets, regarding the free milk supply in scheols and was informed that a copy of the conditions under which it is proposed the supply of milk should be prdvided would be forwarded at an early date ^ to enable the committee to call for tsaders. "It is quite deflnite that the milk to be supplied to the schools must be pas> teurised, for the Government is determined to overcome as far as it is poi* sible any danger that may arise from infection Of the milk after it leaves the eows," said Mr. Maddison. He pointed out that when the syetem was introduced at Auckland only 80 per cent. of the children took the daily ration, but by the end of the year 98 per cent. were being 'supplied with milk.4 While awaiting the necessary information from Wellington, Mr. Maddison is collecting viata" from the varionp schools as to the quantity of milk that will be required, and in this direction he is ascertaining the number of children who have signified their intention of taking the milk if ' supplied. Mr. Maddison said that though it was hoped that tenders would be called at tui early date, ic would be at leasi two months after the aeceptance of the tender before the service to the chiliren could be commenced, for it would be necessary for the party supplymg the milk to import special machinery for the job.
