Development and Extension of Waikaremoana WELDING ON SITE

WELLINGTON, Last night. ' The letting of ,a. huge pipe contraet lo the Hnme Pipe Co. marks a' further" step in the development and extension of the generating capacity of the Waikaremoana hydro electrie power station. The pipe line is a steef oue, 3500 feet in length, and this will he used in conjunction with the new 16.000 kilowatt capacity generator and the accompanying turbine new being constructed in Great Britain. The new pipe line will be parallel .with the existing lines and the Public Works Department will construct the necessary anchorages and foundations. As the pipes range from 6ft. 6in. down to 5ft. 6in. in diameter, they will be .very substantial. Where the pipes enter the powerhouse they will be subjected to a continual expansion pressure of approximately 300 lb. to the square inch, so that care and accuracy will be needed in their manufacture. It is intended to transport the steel plates to be used on to the site of the pipe line and there to weld them into the pipes. The completion of this unit will bring the total generating power of the statiOB to 48,000 kilowatta
