Fresh Horses For Paeroa SECOND DAY HANDICAP « \ mm.
(Special from
AUCKLAND, Friday. Not many sbuthern horses have been entered for the Auckland EaSter meeting and the 'local contingent should be able to hold their dwn. The Easter Handicap1 has drawn 45 entries, the possible visitors being Shy, taughirig Lass, Chiof Eanger, The Buz'zer, Martara, Debham, Notium, Lady Kyra and Hatit Mon'de." . In this race the Marton trainer L. G. Morris appears to hold a very strong hand with his three' representatives, Laughing Lass, Chi,ef Eanger and The Buzzer. Last year 's winner, Eoy al ' Appellant, who iaced only at Te Rkpa last month, is expected to make his xeappearance' in the" big "mile and he is going. to be one of the early favourites, .for. he is working well' and, as 'a result of recent f ailures, will not be o'ver-burden-ed in the Way of 'weight. Not 'So Easy. Now. At one time .it looked as.if the Great Northern. Uhampagne Stakes ,at Ellerslie on .Easter Saturday rwould ; be $asy to win, but it stdl looka.as if'F-rancis Drake will -.prpve •; a stumbling block to his adv, ersaries. It was thought' that this colt .would race at Riccarton, duTing the holidays, but a change of stable plans has apparently. . provided for Courtcraf t going to the southern, centre, with the crack youngster once again to race at Ellerslie. / " . - - "While the distance of the Ohinemuri Cup is one . mile t abd three furlongs, .the big event on tU© second day, .Wednesday next, is only eight and a-half furlongs, so that it is well within the compass of good staying sprihtersi The course is far frqm a trying'one . and it suits the sp'rinters better than the handicap . horses. This is reflected in the entries. for Wednesday 's race, whieh total- 32 as against. 21 for the Cup, while several of the Cup candidates are not engaged on the second day, their owners being wise to the fact that a good deal more than.stamina is required for the shorter event. Galilee's Chance. Among the sprintera engaged in tho Bhaw Handicap that should have ho difficulty in gcttihg^ the distaxtce tnere are Triune, llmg JNeptune, Galilee, Golden Sheila, Kiionsa, Farquet, Crooning, JLmpasto, Prince Acre, EOyal Dance and Gtar Artist. Of thi.s "lot Galileo, Triune, Golden Sheila and Hilonsa wjll have very good prospects if allowed to take their chance.- Kilberis won -this race last year, and prevxous winners were, Wait and ;fcjee, Imamint, Eager Rose, Leitriin, Sir Mond and Sir Russell, rioue of these being open handicap performers at. the time: they won. With Galilee engaged, trainer A. Cook will hayc a chance of fqllpwing'up his. previous successes with Wait and See and .Leitriin. As a result of his win over Jack Tar in a hack event at Te Aroha, when couceding him a couple of pounds, Prince Rangi went' up considerably in backers ' '.estimation, for the runner-up' is highly thought of ' and "his f orm has • been very good indeed. " Therefore many have been awaiting the next -appearance of the Te Awamutu gelding. This is to be .oh the second day of the Ohinemuri " fixture in the six furlong Waikino Hack. . He will be ridden by Ji. Horne and a repetition of Te Aroha f orm will make him difficult ' to beat. On the same day Jack Tar will probably be produced in the Hikutaia Hack Oup, for which ho will have roSy prospects ■ Huskie and Valpai. Among fresh horses to contest the irurdle race on the second day: are Bandrif t, Roxy, Huskie, Modern Maid und Yalpai. This quintet is a strong one and they may participate in the final struggle. Huskie is also in the Hack Cup, but he may be started over Ihe battens, especially if his weighfc on the flat is to.be increased by virtue of a good performance to-morrow, Huskie is a fine hurdler and looks, better than ever, so he may succeed in winning another race oi two." Valpai is also a good sort* over. the sticks and a possibility.qn' Wednesday. A horse that showed snrprisingly good form at Pukekohe last week was • Tooley Street, -who finished right up, forth, almost alongside the second and third horsee. This was his first race for some -months, -so his forward .running was unexpepted b'y .the . inajority of speculators. Tooley Street proved very disappointing when he was raced in the province last seaspn, but on his latest form he should soon be making amends, especially as he is, good in easy going. He may .be given a run, in - the sprint on Wednesday at Paeroa and ought to get in the money. Marjory Daw has been very disappointing since she shoWed promise as a two-year-old and • it appearad difficult to place her on the provineial circuit. She was produced, in last week 's two and three-year-old race . at ' Pukekohe and the manner in which she ran on • to finish fourth suggestfed that she is iniproving. She may make her next appearance at Paeroa on Wednesday, but, while her last outing indi'cates that she must be given a chance, ;it may be as well to wait and :see if the improvement continues.
