THE V.R.C. NEWMARKET

A Desperate Finish Aurio 's StaT, says the Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney Herald, started f avourite for the Newmarket Handicap and beat the second favourite, Pamelus, by half a neek. Aurie 's Star really won the race with a brilliant burst of speed in the first furlong. By the time a furlong had been covered ho was fully four lengths in f ront of .the division on the inside of the track. It is difficult to .estimate tho respectivo position of horses on .different sides of the track in races run down the straight six furlongs, but it is safe •to say that at the end of two furlongs Auiie's Star was at least three lengths in front of Stqdio, who was leading the division on the other side of the courso. At the end of another . furlong Aurie 's Star had increased the margin, and two furlongs from home he was so far in front that a repetition of his very easy Oakleigh Plate victory seemed certain. Pamelus was capable of providing much stronger opposition than Aurie 's Star had met at Caulfield. From the two furlongs he began to mahe up ground iapidly, and a furlong from the post he was within two lengths of Aurie 's Star and catching him at every stride. But Aurie 's Star still had a little in reserve, and, although Pamelus ran to within less than a neck of him, he was notv making much impression ; when the post was reached. Pamelus, with four close seconds in importam events since his arrival from Queensland, can be accounted the unluckiest horse seen for a long time. His f orm in the Futurity Stakes suggested a great winning chance in the Newmarket Handicap. Pamelus, however, got some consolatioii by beating Gold Rod in the Lloyd Stakes on tlie last day of the meeting.
