Farmers' Union Proposal

PALMERSTON N., This Day. ' "That owlng to the increased expenditure on hospitals, the Government be asked to institute a State lottery on. similar lines to New South Wales." This was a resolution carried unani- ! mously by the Manawa tui provineial j exeoutive of the Farmers' Union yesI terday. j 4 The proposal was moved by Mr. J. ' ;T. Kent (Waikanae), who said that it : !drffered from previous resolutions in ' ' that the whole of the proceeds would be | available for hospital purposes. Charitable aid would probably be looked •after by t'he national health insuranl'a scheme. i Mr. P. Lynch (Paraparaumu) said that hundreds of pounds were going out of the country, and some effort should be made to retaiu this money in the country. There -was no further comment. COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE The question of State lotteries was j referred to by Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P. for Waitemata, when speaking at i'eildir.g last evening. He said a coinmission would be lookxng into the whole question of gaming inciuding the licensirg of bookmakers, sweepstakcs, and tho like. "Personally I would iicense the bookmaker and have sweepstakes too," , he said, "but sonio may think I am a j hopelessly immoral person," (Laugh- 1 ter,) j
