RULES TO GUIDE MINISTERS

Press Assooiatlon.)

The Presbyterian Church and Divorce DISCRETIONARY POWER

(Bt Teieeraph— :

OAMARU, This Day. The Oamaru Presbytery yesterday considered the Presbyterian General Assembiy's suggested Tules f°r the guidance of xninisters — first, that m a case of divorce through insanity the same party may be remarried; secondly, that in a case of divorce for farlvirp to cprnply with an order for restitution of conjugal rights or three-years' sepaTation neither party shall be remarired. The suggestipn was made by the Rav, H. H. Barton and adopted that, whilo maintaining in a gener&l^ way the Church 's testimony and disapproving of remarriage in the case of the guilty party to a divorce or of those whose divorce hag bepn granted on grounds the Church holds inadequate, the Church recognises that in some cases there are factors making it depirable for socne discretionary power to be left in the hands of offieiating ministers, It was recommended that presbyteriea appoint either a special committee or existing judicial committee tp guide a minister 's decision ,such com mittee to be final.
