Picnic and Prize-Giving

MAKOTUKU, Last Night. The Makotuku district school picnic and prize-giving was Leld on Saturday, the day being hne., and warm and a large number of persons present. Proceedings opened with dinner for the children after which races were he/d, the winnors being: — Boys of the Prxmer classes, Leslie Teck 1, Colin Edgecombe 2; girls, Josie Gamble 1, Doreen Gamble 2; standard I and II — boys, Keithi Ritchie 1, Jack Luscombe 2; girls, Shirley Befkalin 1, Doreen Anderson 2 : Standard III and IV — boys E. Roil 1, F. McMullin and R. Luscombe 2 equal; girls, Gloria Christiansen 1, Patricia Hammond 2; Standard V and VI— boys, Keith Lang 1, Alfred Harvey 2; girls, Bunice Anderson 1, Grace Luscombe 2 ; egg and spoon race — boys, J. Carruthers 1, J. Luscombe 2 ; tyre race — boys, A Harvey 1, G. Garuth.ers 2 ; girls, Eunice Andersoxi

At the conclusion of the races tbe school prizes were presented. Tbe chairman of the school committee, Mr J. Palmer, made * short speechi stating that the pritzies were proeured with money left by the late Mr J. Holden for this pnrpose. He then called upon Mrs Holden to present the prizes aa follow: — Standard VI: Proficiency, M. Berkalm. Standard V : Eileen Olark 1, Grace Luscombe 2. Standard IV: D. Morrison 1, J. Carruthers 2. Standard III: Sylvia Clarke 1, R. Carruthers 2. Standard II. G. Christiansen 1, it. Luscombe 2. Standard 1: Shirley Berkahu 1, D. Anderson 2. Priiner 4: R. Clarke. Primer 3: J. Gamble. Primer 1: D. Hardixig. Mr Aslx's Special Prize Progress: K. Lang. Attendance Certificates : D. Carruthers, D. Andersoxx, P. Hammond, S. JBerkalm, G. Christiansen, E. CJarkke, E. Anderson, M. Horne, R. Luscombe and F. McMuilen. Mrs Holden also presented each scholar with a bag of sweets. The headmaster, Mr Neilson announced that the f'ollowxng awards had been made in the boys' and girls' Agricultural Club. — Mangold growing : J. Palmer, ehampion for Southern Hawke's Bay.
