Waipukurau Tournament

WAIPUKURAU, This Day. The Waipukurau Boxing Glub held the first of its 1937 amateur tourna-m-ents in the Municipal Theatre, Waipukurau last night, when some good bouts were witnessed. At the conclusion of the tournament the patron of the club, Mr A. W. Parsons, presented the prizes to the various winners. The officials were:— Judges, Messrs C. L. Crooks, A. W. Parsons and Dr. C. Eaymond; Teferees, Messrs H. M. Ohristie and J. D. Ormond (Jnr.). The results of the bouts are as follow: — A Euisher (Waipukurau) 8st. 71bs., was beaten by B. Walker (Waipukurau) 8st. 21bs. Eusher took the offensive while Walker was eontent to stand of£ and use his right to advantage to win the iight. F. Elmers (Waipukurau) 10.0, lost to H. Parsons (Manawatu) 9.2. Elnier's longer reach stood him in good stead, but Parsons fought cleverly, using liis lefity and. p.ndmg good blows with the right cross won the bout. J. Griiiins (Waipukurau) 10.1, beat J. Parkinson (Manawatu) 9.10, in a iiard hitting bout in whick Parkinson bloeked well but failed to land his blows. W. Clark (Hastings) 9.-1, lost to P. Kilkolly (Dannevirke) 9.5. A great rally by Kilkolly in the final round, during which he landed several good puuches, won him the bout. B. Peters (Hastings) 7.3, defeated J. McGuire (Dannovirke) 8.0, in an excollent bout. McGuire »s longer reach enabled him to .force the fight in tlie first round but Peters with his straight left and right cross won the bout. P. Lisette (Waipukurau), _ 9.8, was beaten by H. Mclvor (Hastings) 9.5. Mclvor was the more aggressive and landed several puuches with both gloves to the head and won the fight. J. Davey (Waipukurau) 8.12, lost to IL Norris (Manawatu) on a knoclc-out. Davey in the first round was connecting well -with right hooks and straight lefts. A heavy right to the jaw by Norris knocked Davey to the floor for the count of eight when he was saved by the gon g. Davey rallied, but a further hard right to the jaw knockcd Itittt out for the count. B. McKay (Waipukurau) 9.2, bantam weight champion of New Zealand, lost to Collins (Palmerston North) 9.7, in a good bout. McKay proved the more aggressive, but met with stubborn resistance by Collins who timed his punches well. McKay fought back hard but Collins with straight lefts to th© jaw and good body punches won the bout. B. Nicol (Waipukurau) 5.12, beat G. McGuire (Dannevirke) 6.3. Nicols by .getting inside McGuire 's heavy swings, won after a good bout. A. Kitt (Hastings) 10.9, defeated J. Johnston (Manawatu) 10.7, on a knockout. The bout opened quickly and Johnston was knocked out by a hard riglit to the jaw in the second round. P. Schinanski (Taranaki) 12,6, drew with J. Bellis 1 Otane! 12.9.
S. Smales (Waipukurau) 10.2, beat L. HuzziflE (Taranaki) 10.4. This was the best bout of the evening. Hard exchanges were made by each boxer and Smales scored well with his left, winning the bout by a fair margin. D. Coughlan (Manawatu) 8.13, lost to T. Loveridge (Taranaki) 9.5, on , a technical knock-ont. Loveridge immediately took the offensive and used both gloves well, giving Coughlan very little time to fight back. C. Marshall (Taranaki) 10.12, lost to M. Spring (Pahiatua) 11.2. Spring connecting well with body blows won the bout after a good exhibition on the part of both boxers.
