APPLE-A-DAY SCHEME

Introduction Into Schools Advocated HASTINGS MAN'S IDEA Tbe introduction .of an appie-a-day scbeme was advocated by a leading Hastings citizen tbis morning. Tbe contention was tbat, in addition to tbe free supply of inilk to tbe pupils attending tbe various schools, tbe service (ould be enlarged to provide tbe children witb a free supply of fresh fruit, prelerably apples, "Wbile I fully approve of the idea of a supply of milk for tbe children attending tbe schools, I dp not see tbe necessity at present, at any rate, of pasteurising th© milk, and tbe money tbat would be spent on tbis process eould, jn my opinion, bo utilised in providing eacb child with an apple every day," he said to a Herald-Trifaune representative. "We all know tbat fresh iruit is a wonderfui healtb-giving food • and the apple-a-day idea bas always appealed to me. "Quite apart from tbe health aspeet l am' convinced tbat, as a business proposition, tbe apple-a-day idea could be made a payable proposition if appbed to tbe scliools in tbe same way as it is proposed to do witb tbe milk," be said. "It would perhaps be too much to suggest tbat at first the supply pf apples be daily tbrougbout th© year, but certainly tbrougbout the freshfruit season there would be very little expense incurred in distributing apples to tb© children, It would giye a great fillip fo tbe fruit-growing industry. "After all I believe tbat tbe effcct of tbe free-milk supply on the dairying industry generally is one of tbe vital factors leading the Government to push for ward witb the milk-in-scbools scbeme," be added. "In a similar manner tbe apple-a-day idea would be beneficial to the fruit-growing industry, and th© initial outlay" of putting tbescbeme over would not be as great as tbat for tbe milk."
