DR. J. A. GILRUTH

Dr. John Anderson Gilruth, D.V.Sc« (Melb.), M.R.C.V.S., ' F.R.S., cMef of the division of animal health of the Commonwealth Cquncil of Scientifio and Industrial Research, whose death, at the age of 66 was reported by cabla from Melbourne yesterday, was bora in Arbroath, Scotland, in 1871a and wa* educated there and at Dundee, Glasgow, London, and Paris. In 1891 he qualified as a member of the Royal ; College of Veterinary Surgeons, and in p. 1909 he graduated in Melbourne as a doctor ' of veterinary science. He was appointed Government veterinarian in New Zealand in 1SD3, cEFef veterinarian in 1898, and pathologist to the Health Department in 1901. He was a member of the Royal CommiBsion on • Public Health in New Zealand in. 1900. In 1907 he was appointed a colonel in the Defence Department, but he left New Zealand in the same year to take a position in the Australian Defence Department. From 1908 to 1912 Dr^ Gilruth was professor of veterinary; pathology and director of the Research Institute at Melbourne University. From this position he was appointed Administrator of the Northern Temtory, remaining there until 1920. He became chief of the division of animal health in the Council for Scientifio andi Industrial Research at Melbourne in 1930. His widow, who was formerly Miss Jennie McKay, is a New Zea ^ lander.
