OBITUARY

John Charles Schenck (From Our Own Correspondent) DANNEVIRKE, Last Night. The death occurred in the Dannevirke Hospital yesterday of a highly respected pioneer of the Whetukura district, in the person of Mr John Charles Schenck. Deceased was the only son of the late Carl Schenck, mining engineer, of London, and was born in that city. He was educated at Bishop Stortford's College, Hartfordshire. The late Mr Schenck came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Lady Jocelyn, in 1886. Prior to leaving England, Mr Schenck was connected with the firm of Munt, Brown and Co., and also occupied an important pdsition with the Prudential Assurance Co., London. Shortly after arriving fn the colony, Mr Schenck acquired property in the Whetukura and Te Urj districts, and had resided on .the former place for 40 years. Ahhough the late Mr Schenck who had been in indifferent health for some yfears, did not take a prominent part in public „ affairs, he always had the welfare of the district where he resided much at heart. He was intensely interested in horticulture, and his glass-house was one of the show places of the district. He is survived by a widow and two daughters — Mrs G. A. France (Matamau), and Mrs E. S. Sargent (Ngapaeruru), for whom much sympathy will be felt by a very wide circle of friends. Th© funeral took. place this afternoon at the Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke, being very largely attended. The Rev. Mr Corbin, of Ormondville, officiated at the services at St. John's Chiurch and also at the graveside, and Mr H. T. Russell ' at tlie former played deceased' s favourite hymn, "Rock of Ages." The pall bearers were Messrs S. McFarlane (Dannevirke), T. Loft (Te Uri), W. Chadwick, B. Barker, W. Ellingham, and C. Wiliiams (Whetukura), Many beautiful floral emblems of sympathy were sent.
