WALK RECORD BROKEN
I, DriscoIPs Time Over Twg Miles UNOFFICIAL EFFORT An unofficial New Zealand record for the two-miie walk tbat was 7 4-5 secs. better than the 41-year-old existing best time was set up by tbe Dominion champion, Ian Driscoll, at the meeting last night of the Napier Amateur Athletie and Oycliug Olub. A wondetful reception greeted the announcement of the thne. Driscoll, with a perfectly fine night to favour him, covered the ground in easy style. and ,finished with a wonderful sprint. He will offlcially attack the record shortly. Lap times were, in order: — lmin. 38 secs; lmin. 44secs; lmin. 48secs; lmin 46secs ; lmin. 56seca ; 1 min. 44secs ; 1 min. 45seos; 1 min. 43 4-5sece. Total. 14mins. 4 4-5secs. A The chill evening did little to alter either th.e attendance of spectators oi the entries in the various events. In several races it was necessary to rnn heats, ther© being three heats in the 100 yards. The 880 B grade race provided interesting watching. Ilells, off the 85-yard mark, led all the way, but was ha-rd put to it to remain in front when Coop er and Pycroft challenged strongly. tho trio being separated by less than five yards as the winner breasted the tape. An amusing error occurred when the results of this race and the 880 yardB j'uiiior oycle were announced following each other. T-e announcer gave times that indicated that the latter event took a second longer than the run. Many of those present did not notice the slip until the time for the running race was corrected by 34 seconds. Ian Driscoll conceded 660 yards to the limit man in the two-mile walk. with H. Atkinson 530 yards ahead of the champion. From the commencement of the race he speedily shortened the distance. Half-a-mil© from home he bad shortened the margin to 70 yards; at the begjinning of the last lap he lcd the field by 20 yards; and won by 70 yards. With a wonderful dash he created a new unofficial record for the distance by 7 4-5secs. The time will not be claimed as the race was merely an unofficial trial in preparation for a further attempt.
