BANK ROBBERS CAUGHT
Quick Arrest By New York Police (Received 27, 8.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 26. At Atmonk, New York, Merle Vandenbush, ex-convict and bank robber, whom Mr J. Edgar Hoover, Director oi the Burean of Criminal Investigation, dubbed "Public Rat No. 1" and two confederates were captured a few minutes after they had robbed a nearby bank and escaped with 17,800 dollars. He had been widely sought by Federal agenta in connection with the kidnapding of a New J" ersey trooper recentlv. Vandenbu«sh was ignominidusly trapped in the baggage "compartment pf an autonlobild. Three village policemen who had takefi ' him into custody were at first unfamiliar with his identity.
