Praise and Condemnation From Business Man HIGH-TAX DANGERS

AUGKLAND, Last Night. In a critical review of the Government's legislation,- Mr A. A. Ross, retiring president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, said in his annual address, that the placing of the main highways under unified cotrol was a desirable change. He commended the efforts to make the roads safer for the public. Regarding local Government, he expressed a hope that tangible results would be obtained from the efforts for reform. Referringj to taxation, Mr Ross said that New Zealand was now one of the most highly taxed countries in the world. It would have been wiser for the .Government to have maintained the taxation scale unchanged, and allowed recovery to produce more reveuue. The abolition of the Railways Board was a great mistake} and he predicted a relapse in railways finance, In the dairy iiidustrys changes had been in the direction of takingi oontrol out of the hands of the producers, H® considered that the effects would be detrimental. Referring to the Reserve Bank, Mr Ross said continuouB viligance would be needed.
