BURSARIES FOR STUDENTS
Alteration in System of Award MORE GENEROUS SCALE (By 'I'elegrapb — Presa Aaaoai&tion. I In a statement lssued to-day, the Minister of Educatdon, the Hon. P. Fraser, aimounced the introduction of a numher of important alterations in the system of award of univeraity national bursaries for 1937 and the following yeaxs, The general effect of the new regulations is to provide for the awaid of bursaries on a much more generous scale than during the last four yeare and also to make provisiou for granting hoarding allowances on certaln grounds (chlefly those of distance from university college or hardship). Tae new regulatioM provide for two kinds of national bursaries, nunely^ ordinary bursaries and boarding bursaries, The ordinary bursary will provide the holder with free nniversity tuition in an approved course of study up to a maximum of £20 a year. and the boarding bursary entitles Lthe holder to an annual boarding allowanee up toi |a maximnm of £30, in addition |o thej jpayment of tuition fees not exceeding] £20 annually, The currency of ithiel bursary is to be three yeara, but provisiou has been made for extension in oertain circumatances and in the easo of a medical student the norznal term Of .the bursary is to be four years. Ordinary bursaries may be awarded to holders of higher leaving certificates ahd bparding bursaries will be awarded! to applicants selected in, order of merit! on the resulta of the university en-; .trance scholarship examination. There will be no limit to the number of ordinary bursaries awarded in any one year, but fhe xegulations provide for a total of 65 boarding bursaries annually. Forty of these will be awarded! to students obliged to live away fromi home and the remainder to university! jfcown students In need of monetary as-i sistance. , i Applicatious for ordinary bursaries | will be accepted from all holders of a higher leaving certificate whether awarded during 1936 or not, and applicatious for boarding bUrsariea may bo siDiilarly made this year by all quali- : l?ed by fcxamination during any ohe pf jthe last five years. t
