Store Sheep Market At Stortford « CAUTIOUS BIDDING The store-sheep entry at Stortford to-day totalled 25,000, but here again the market was variable and bidding was cautious right from the start, 'with a number of lines passing, and someentries failing to elicit a single bid. Back-country lines -tfere much in evidence, with several of the entries light in frame and poor in condition. Good breeding ewes were few, and, with the better lines of lambs and wethers, met with- quite good competition. The cautious tone of the market was very evident, and the proportion of passings showed a marked increase on recent saies. Selected" entries and prices paid are as follow: — A pen of 99 aged ewes realised 16/10, A Big Hill Station draft on account of Messra Hewitt and Vautier, a pen of 600 4-th wethers, fairly grown generally, somewhat mixed in the skins, but good healthy fresh conditioned sheep, made 24/- and 24/- in cuts of 300. A Putere Staiiou line, on account of Mr C. Wells, a pen of 630 two-tooth wethers, fully dipped, medium framed and light, fairly woolled, with a proportion of Lincoln-skinned sheep included passed at 21/-. Running with Southdown rams since Pebruary 23, a pen of 294 four-tooth to five-year ewes passed without any bid being called. A line of 194 store to forward ewes, a mixed entry, passed at 10/6. A further Putere draft, 400 two-tooth wethers, in similar order to the previous Putere line, passed at 21/1. • A pen of 165 six-year ewes, big framed sheep, generally in good condition, somewhat mixed in the wool, quite well mouthed, passed at 19/9, A Kaiwaka line of two-tooth ewes, lightly framed, strong woolled, mad® 24/7. Eif ty four-tooth ewes, from Kaiwaka, active sheep, again rather light in the frame, mixed in the wool, with strong quaiitr'es predominating, realised 24/6. Lorne! from Patoka, and on account of Mr A. Bennett, a liue of 300 woolly whitefaee wether lambs, medium and fresh conditioned, only lately weaned and dipped, sold at 1D/4. A six-tooth draft from Kaiwaka, 103 ewen, light, mixed in the wool, sold at 26/9. The four-year sheep from the same property, soundly mouthed, again mixed in frame and wool, made 23/9. A Patoka entry of 242 whitefaee woolly wether lambs, off rape, nicely grown thriving lambs, passed afc 17/3. A pen of 222 Kaiwaka five-y.ear-old ewes} soundly mouthed, strong woolled sheep, mixed in quality 5 light in condition, passed at 18/3. A pen of 148 mixed age ewes, racging from two-tooth to five-year} with the older sheep. predominating, on account of Mr N. M. Campbell, made 17/3. A pen of 142 grown wethers, ex Kaiwaka, in good order, met the market at 25/11 after a good run of competition. A good pen of 100 blackfac© cross lambs well grown and in good order, met the market at 20/-. A pen of 107 blackface lamf>s, in from (Opapa, small to medium tramed, light but good, made 15/2. A Waimarama entry of blackface lambs, medium framed, in good order, realised 15/3. Offered on account of the Langdon Estate, a pen of 108 blackface laxubs, well grown, and in good order , made 17/10. Eighty-nine blackface lambs, in from Maraetotara and on account of Mr J. Tbom, well grown lambs generally, and carrying a lot of condition, met gcod inquiry to sell at 19/6. — iiim ■ in* -m
