GRACIE FIELDS GOING TO HOLLYWOOD
The sensational annoimcement. comes from Hollywood that Gracie Fields has signed a contract with 20th Century Fox Film Corporation for what is said to be the highest salary ever paid to i any woman film star. I doubt (comments an. English writer) whether Gracie has broken all cash records, as stated; but I have reason to believe she wjll get £200,000 to maike four pictui:es during the next two years. Her next production will he made in London in June. For the remaining pietures she will have to visit Hollywood, though most of her work will be done on this sifi®. Darryl F. Zanuck, one of America's most brilliant producers, will be responsible for the pietures, and will be assisted by Monty Banks, who will return from Hollywood to London for the making of the first of the series. Gracie Fields was the third biggest 1936 box-office attraction in Britain, Shirley Temple being top of the list, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers second, Olark Gable fourth, and Jessie Matthews fifthi. But Gracie jb almost unknown in America. Mr Joseph M. Schenck, head of 20th Century Fox, js confident, however, that in Darryl Zanuck's production® Bhe can be equally popular in both countries. Miss Fields has hitherto appeared for Associated Talking Pietures, produced by Mr Basjl Dean. She is now working on her last picture for this company, "The Show Goes On."
