WORLD CIVILISATION.
4 'You will never get peace in the world until you have gofc something approacbing a world civilisation — in otber words a State Of affairs in which without even thinking about it, we regard ourselves ratber more as citizens of tbe world than as citizens of Great Britain, just as to-dgy we regard ourselves ratber more as citizens of Great Britain than as citizens, say, of Liverpool," said Major E. H. Thornton in a recent B.B.C. broadcast. "And bowever far off tbat state of affairs may be, we xuay be quite certain tbat it will never be achieved by any sudden or violent revolution. It will be reached by an infinite number otf imperceptible cbanges, all tending to produce uniformity in tbe way we tbink and feel and in tbe way we conduct our daily lives. Even to-day, wben Heaven knows tbe immediate outlook even for a European — let alpne a world — civilisation is just about as black as it could well be, 1 still believe tbat we are nearer to tbat civilisation now than We were even 25 years ago. I believe tbat tbe plain men and women of, let us say, Birmingbam, Orleans, Zurich, Milan, Munieb, Dresden, Amsterdam and Antwerp, wben they are not busy thinking wbat tbeir politicians tell them to, are far more nearly fellowcitizens to-day tban tbey were a qu'arter of a century ago."
