"OF THE MAKING OF BOOKS"
Tbe number of books publisbed during 1936 was 16,572, tbe higbest annnal total ever recorded, says tbe Publisbers' Circular. Tbe xncrease Over tbe previous yeaf was 462, and it xs remarkable tbat nearly tbe Wbole of this increase xepresented 4new" books, tbat is, books publisbed for the first tiine, and that new editions and reprints remained stationary. This rising tide of books may be vieWed with apprehension by the Literary Canute, but such an attitude is misguided. A great change' has taken place (and is progressing constantly) since the days when it might have been possible for an individual reader to keep in close touch with every book ptiblished. That change may be summed up in the word "variety," for our books have increased in the range and specialisation of their subjeet matter to an extent> that far sutpasses tbeir increase in mere quantity.
