TURANGUKUMU BUSH

Portion May Ultimately be Sold to Public MINISTER'S ADVICE The Napier Chamber of Commerce again discussed the preservation of the bush areas at Turangukumu and Bnnanga last night, when advice was received that there was a possibility of the ujtimate sale to the public of part of the f ornier area. The advice was contained in a copy of a letter from the Hon. F. Langstone, Minister in charge of seenery-preservation, to the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P. It wa® decided to send letters of thanks to the owner of the property, Mr Gardner, for his offer, and to Mr Barnard for his work. The letter from the Minister stated: "Referring to the representatipns made to me at Napier by a deputation from the Napier Ohamber of Gommerco, which you introduced on January 12, in regard to preserving the bush in the vicinity of Turangukumu Hill, I have to state that the report of the Commia'sioner of Orown Lands, Napier, is now to hand. '"The Commissioner has been in touch with Mr Gardner's solieitors, and from replies received it is clear that Mr Gardner is not pepared at the present time to entertain any proposal for the sale of a bush area for the purpoBQ of a scenic reserve. "The solieitors state that it is Mr Gardner 's intention, When cutting the bush, to leave untouched a portion along the hignway and ultimately to offer this area to the public at a reasonable price. Evidently Mr Gardner intends to carry out burning operations in the near future, and as this might result in Oumaging the bush area referred to he is not nreoared to enter into any deflnite arrangement in regard to the sale of the poposed scenio area at the present time." Mr W. Harvoy stated that the responsibility of the owner of adjoining property in regard tp fire probably actuated the latter part of the letter. He con'sidered that the question of preservation of the bush at Runanga should be placed before the meeting, aiid a motion to this effect was carried, Runanga iS about 60 miles from Napier.
