Dug By "The Delver." Betting at Woodville and Tolaga Bay this week will be under the singlo pool, and at Winton and Waikato it will be •lnder win-and-place. • * • ■ H. E. Russell reports from Woodville fchat Maia is thoroughly enjoying his "let up," and that the colt is not to rejoin the active brigade until the end of March. Maia goes back to Australia for the spring racing. # # • Three consecutive wins in handicap class are usually more than is to be expected from any horse ; but three times this feat was performed over the recent Taranaki and Egmont meetings. The three horses to seore trebles were Sansfoy, Friesland and Great Hope. • • • Antagonist, sire of the dam of Rfobant, a winner at Wingatui, had a meteoric career on the turf, and his record is: One stait, one win. The win was recorded in the Middie Part Plate of 1911. Antagonist was got by Soult from Miss Annie by Seaton Delavaly— First Love, by Nordenfeldt — hishgirl by Ya Hendon. • • • At the Dunedin meeting Galleon put up a most remarkable perfoi'mance in the Preside-t's Handicap. After going about three furlongs and a-half he was seven or eight le,ngths away last of all. He then reeled olf a run that cai'ried him up to beat Trebleack, who had been one of the pacemaLers. • • • Haughty Winner haa trained on since he opened his winning} account at the Wellington Cup meeting, and even so his form draws attention to Brunhilde who carried 9.7 and gave the colt 121b. and ran him to half a length in the Hopeful Stakes, run on the last day at Trentham. • • • The Publicans' Handicap winner, Paper Slipper, was bred by Mr Norman M'Lean, but he passed on his dam, Shuffle, to Sir Charles Clifford. Shuffle fche dam of Paper Slipper, was. got by Solferino — Tinihanya, by Absurd— Formless, by Multiform. • • • The Dunedin Cup winner Wild Chase, was bred by his owner, Sir Charles Wild Hind, by Autumnus — Kirriemuii', Clifford, and got by Paper Money from by Clanrarald — Madowla, by Trenton. At the New Zealand Cup meeting Wild Chase won the Riccarton Handicap, the New Zealand Derby and Canterbury Cjp. • # • Haughty Winner won th'e Champagne Stakes in such a pronounced style as oO give him claims to be the best two-yeai-old of the season. He won easily from Royal Chief. Happy Night was wxth them after turning for home, out Fien etoppfu, and third place went to Sferomboli.— "Sentinel." • • • The Marton horseman B. H. Morris, was in great form at the > recent Egmont meeting. During the two days he had seven rides for five firsts, a third and once unplaced. The only time that he was not in the money was on Lowenberg in the Egmont Cup. On the • opening day he- performed the "hat trick" on Great Hope, The Buzzer and Friesland. • • • Eriesland's recent good form indicates rather clearly that he is now right back to his best, and is probably better than ever. Just under 12 months ago he was unlucky not to win the Thompson Handicap at Trentham — the only horse to beat him was Silver Ring, then at his peak. The Thompson will undoubtedly be his next mission. « • m ■ Reports from Awapuni state that Flammarion is hitting out in good style and may be given*a race on the second day of the Woodville meeting. Last season Flammarion proved himself a good stake winner, being successful on four occasions. As he gamed most of his victories in the autumn he should be worth keeping in mind during the remainder of the season, particularly in sprint events. e # • The veteran Royal Saxon set out in the Warrington Hurdles to keep the opposition as busy as possible, and succeeded in not only doing so, but also scored a win At one stage he was six or eight lengths m front of Royal Pal, who would have supplied more trouble to the winner but - for losing ground at the last hurdle. Royal Saxon was foaled in 1923 and this was only his third public outing over the sticks. • • • The veteran horseman R. Derrett had a yery long career in the saddle. He won the Publicans' Handicap in 1885 on Rubina, in 1887 on Rocket, in 1889 on Ruby, in 1890 on Merrie England, in 1895 on Barnaby and in 1898 on Arline. Derrett won the Dunedin Cup of 1877 on Fishhook and in 1885 on Vanguard, and also established a line record in connection with the Champagne. He scored his first win in the Champagne Stakes on Oudeis in 1883, on Gipsy King in 1887, on Carbine in 1888, on Cajolery in 1891, on Bombshell in 1896, on Gold Medallist in 1897, on Conrtier in 1899, on Menscbikofi' in 1901, and on Lady Landon in 1906. * * * Tbe Juckiest and the nuluckiest horses at Wingatui on Saturday were Top Row and Happy Night respectively, says the Dunedin "Times." From what looked a false start in the Hopeful Handicap Happy Night was standing flat-footed when Top Row and Sil- j ver Bond bad got well on the way, an^i

he gave them several lengths ■ breals over the first furlong. He was etiU ro an apparently hopeless position turning for home> bufc then setthng down to his difficult task, gradually closed up the gap and just failed to overhaul Top Row. A stride past the post he was an easy winner. There were only five runners in the raoe; but they were not in line when sent off from a enap start, and both Circular Note and Happy Night suffered and in addition they eoilided when they did move off. It was a most pronounced case of a eertain victory being turned into a nar« row defeat by an unfortunate dispatch. • m • F. E. Jones put up a remarkable record in connection with the Dunedin Champagne Stakes when associated as first horseman to the Chokebor© Lodgo stables. He won the race nine times in 11 years. In 1908 he won on Husbandman, in 1909 on Husbandman. in 1910, on Sharpshooter, in. 1911 on Counterfeit, in 1912 on Oounterfeit. C. Emeiv son brok© the run by winning for the stable on Nightwatch, and then Jonea won in successive years on Angelina, Adjutant, Good Hope, Gamecoek and • Heathercote. The stable* carried on by winning the next year with Miss Mimic, ridden by G. Young, and Winter Wind, ridden by F.- C. Porter. H. Young won for the stable in 1923 on Wild Hind, and A. E. Ellis won on Fracas in 1933. This year G. Humphries carried. on the good work by winning on Haughty Winner. The association of the stable dates back to 1889, when G. H. Clifford (afterwards Sir George) won with Cynisca. In other colours Cynisca won the Wellington Cup in three consecutive years.
