HEDGE ABLAZE

Outbreak Near Mahora School Exceptionally quick work on the part Of the Hastings Fire Brigade resulted in a speedy quelliug of the flames when a macrocarpa hedge in Frederick street caught fire shortly after 11.15 this morning. ~The hedge fronted a vacant section a short distance past the Mahora School, and within a few seconds of its catching alight it was blazing furiously, a smoke pall spreadIng rapidly. The brigade turned out smartly and, with one lead, had the flames under control in a few seconds, much to the disappointment . of a large and enthusiastic band of children, who followed the engine awheel and on foot. The damage was confined to the hedge, but for a short time the sparks threatened to blow with the wind on to neighbouring houses. It is believed that the origin of the fire was in the th^owing-away of a cigarette butt or a lighted match by a passer-by
