PAYMENT OF RATES
Last Day To-day HASTINGS COLLECTION Four o 'cloek this afternoon is the fcour when all borough rates for the *ow current year must be paid; otherMsdse they will be subjected to an additional 10 per cent. There was a rush in the payments towards the close oi last week, and this cnorning the rate derks at the borough offices were kept exceptionally busy, there being a atream of people into the offices makiug their payments. TJp to the time the offices closed on Baturday at noon, altogether £34,(582 had been received out of a total rate •truck of £42,370. Friday's collection jraui quite the. best yet, £3658 being collected on that day, but during the. three bours_ the offices were open on Saturday aiorning £2628 was paid in. It is now certain that the percent*ge of the rate collected this year will be greater than last year, for the penalty last year was attached to about £6600 of unpaid rates. This year there now remains only £7688, and ttany of the biggest ratepayers have yet to cneet their obligations, it being their custom to do so on the last day before the penalty is added.
