* _ NELSON, This Day. Nelson is baiyl contest-minded. Rarely has Haven V>ad known such a crowd as that which thronged it Vhen xesidents flocked in their hundreds to welcome North Island bands which arrived by boat. Long befoi'e the ferry steamer wag due to arrive a crowd began to gather. Selections by tbe Nelson Garrison Band belped to while away the time until the Matangi drew alongside the wharf. The bandsmen disembarked and fonned "up behind the Nelson Pipe Band, who ied the procession. The Iwnners of the various .bands added a jtoueh of colour to the procession. 13y Customhouse Hotel, where two streams •f traffic merged, progress was almost Impossible for a while, cats, cyclists and pedestrians packing the road froin footpath to footpath. Tne entry of the bands into Nelson could almost be descnbed as tfiumphal, and so long was the line of cars that it was half an bour before the last vehicle had pass•d Saltwater Bridge. Bands which arrived by the ferry ' yesterday morning were met by the pipe band and the Nelson Citizens' Band. The southern bands arrived dnring the week-end, travelling overland. The muster was complete this morning when the Marlborough Moun.ted Rifl.es Band arrived. Wherever the bands appeared in public during the yeek-end the people's interest was yeiy evident. _ The Dominion Pipe Band Associa■#ion has granted permission for the A «4ud B oontest to be held at Timaru nan Easter Saturday.
