PROBATION FOR THEFT
Offence at Waipawa The theft at Waipawa of sums of £10 and 8/6 resulted in Oscar Albert Jones, of Napier, motor mechanic, being admitted to probation for one year when he was charged with the offence before Mr J. Milier, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate's Court this morning. It was ordered that the money should be repaid at the rate of 10/- a week. Detective-Sergeant H. Nuttall said that the accused, who had been employed as a wireless salesman, sold a £32 wireless set to a man named McBride at Waipawa. He was given a cbeque, part of which he paid on behalf of Mr McBride to Williams and Kettle, Ltd. From the remainder, £10, he was to pay 8/6 for a wireless licence and the balance as a payment on the radio. He was then questioned by the polico regarding arrears oi^ a maintenanco order for his wife and children, and used the money to pay the arrears. Appearing for the accused, Mr O. W. Nash pointed out that the accused had not previously been in trouble, and that ho was worried about having to go to gaol if he did not pay. The Bench allowed probation for one year, and ordered that the money should he refunded,
