RECRUITS WANTED
Motor-Cycle Platoon For The H.B. Regiment LEWIS GUN UNITS Provided; that sufficient . recruits aro obtained, . the motor-cycle platoon of the Hawke*'s Bay ' Efegiment " will be formed before the annual eamp of the regiment at Dannevirke next month, and will accompany it to camp for training. It is expected to reeruit tho full platoon, numhering 32 motorcyclists, from Hastings and Napier, but training will be begun as soon as ten or a dozen recruits have 'been obtained. Plans for a carrier for a machine-gun to be attached to the motor-cycle have, it is understood, been prepared by the Ordnance Departihent, but the carriers are not yet ready for use. It has been decided, however, that tlie platoon will consist ' of • four Lewis-gun sections, each comprising eight cyclists. One of Ihem will have the gun attached to his bicycle, another will caTry spare parts and a quantity of ammunition, and the rest wiil be equipped with- further ammunition and supplies. The 1st Battalion of the Hawke's Bay Eegjment is anxious to establish a platoon before the annual camp, and the commanding officer hopes that sufficient recruits will be offering in Hastings and Napier. The annual camp, at Dannevirke, begins on March 10, when officers and. N.C.O.'s will assemble, and the Temainder of the regiment will enter camp on Mareh 13. The motor-cycle platoon will ride. through from Napier on March 13. . The motor-cycle ■ platoon of the 1st Battalion of the Wellington Kegiment, which has been in camp with tlie regiment at Waipukurau, carried out a road reconnaissance from Waipukurau to Napier yesterday, headed by the platoon commander, - Lieutenant R. B. Fell. He said' that the platoon had carried out a very usef ul • week 's work in camp, and WOiild '^eedily be worked into a smart and mobile unit of th« regiment. One particularly good feat was the clinib by the wliole platoon to the top of Mount Vernon. The hill had no road to the topj and although it had on occasions been climbed "by individual cyclists, the f eat' of the platoon in going up' in formation was regarded as excellent.- .
