PATANGATA COUNTY

Engineer's Report On The Patangata County Council engineer, Mr J. C. McLauchlan, submitted the following report at the monthly meeting of the council: — Porangahau Riding The overhaul of the main highway has progressed fairly well, though the work was delay ed through wet weather after the New Year. A total of 46-1 cubic yards of maintenance metal was put out for ibo month. The whole road was Taked in before the holidays, and will ,be trimmed up this week by the Diesel grador. The Herbertville roads are in good order, and will be raked in as aoou as possible. A new line of pipes was put in near the Wainui sports grouncl. The Farnham suspension bridge cost £232 16/6, and a statement of the cost and an account for half tho amount has been (sent forward. , The Cook's Tooth and . Wangaehu roads were inspected recently, and are in good condition, though the filling at the old bridge site again washed out. The earetaker of the cemetery, Mr A. Lambert, is leaving the district. An inspection of the Mangaorapa roads was made last week, and a few loads of stripping is required at certain corners which have cut out to tho clay. The contractor i's still at work in Kate '» quarry, and about 800 cubic yards of spauls are still required to complete necessary work ou the main highway and Eush road. Eparaima Riding A start was made after last meeting in preparing the road near Wanstead for sealing, and fair progress was made until the contractor shifted the crusher to Hunter 's road. The Wehr grader and roller have been at work on the Wallingford-Wanstead section of this highway, and have made a considerable improvement. } The metalling of Hunter 's * access road nnder Government grant is progreSsing slowly, but it is hoped the work will be completed * tliis month. Lady Hunter protestod against the taking of metal from the deposit near the station residence, and wlien this eontract is completed it is proposed to investigate other deposits with a view to getting suppliefc elsewbcre. The Diesel grader is re-forming a bad sction on Tahu road, and is off-' hitching the big drain on McAulay's drain. The Booth grader raked in Wilder road, and a few loads of maintenance metal are required near Annett's homestead. The metalling of Stoddart's road will be proceeded with on completion of Hunter 's road contraet. The grader raked in the Eush road and 232 cubie yards of crushed metal has been delivered on the upper end and near tho main road. This road is being graded oy the Booth maehine. Patangata Riding The Diesel grader raked in the main highway during last month and it is in fair order. 1 The shoiilders of tho sealed section near Otane have been ,olled and this has improved the shnpe of the road. The patching on the sealing has also improved this sectiou. Oero Riding The main ' highways in the OerO riding liave been trimmed up with the Diesel grader recently, and are in good order. The road gang is now at work on the Makara stream willows, cutting the growth from tlie stuinps, and as this work is now nearly completed, the work of poisoning the stumps will bo commenced. The contractor is making good progress with the cutting and hauling out of willows through Mr Kenderdine "s property, and cleared well over a mile on this length. The Te Apiti and Mangakuri roads were completed before the holiday period, and these roads are in very good order. The gang will clean up the St.. Lawrence and MangararaTa roads when the willow work is done. The Atua road was offhitehed after New Year and a very good job made of this road. Tamumu and Pourerero The main highways through this district were raked in by tbe Wehr grader prior to tbe holidays. These roads are in good condition for traffic. Tho beach access was not good just before the holidays and extra lengths of wire netting were placcd on the sand above hlgliwater and this rnado the approaeh to the beach satisfactory. Mangatarata Riding The power grader will "go out over tliese roads as soon as available. Some red metal is required in places to lift the outer side of the road. and this will be sent out shortlv.
