RECORDS UNBROKEN

S^immers Fail to Make New Times LINDSAY AND SYMON

The added attraction of attempts on two New Zealand records made the usual club night of the Napier Swim ming Club in the Napier Municipal Baths last night a most interesting meeting. Althougb both attempts failed, the spectators had the opportunity of'seeing two of the Dominion's leading swimmers in B. P. Lindsay and R. Symon in action over distances of one mile and 100 yards respectively. , In anticipation of the two attempts, a greater number of spectators than usual assembled at the baths, and Lindsay, whose mile swim was the first event on the programme, received a fine ovation as he was introduced. Interest, which often lags in a race of such length, Was maintained throughout, and in the final stages of the swim excitement was intense. The easy style of the champion, who has held every New Zealand freestyle title from 220 yards to a mile, evoked admiring comment as the appare&fcly tireless strok© at© up the distance. The 440 yards was done in 5min. Slsecs ; the 880 yards in llmin. 21 2-ffsecs ; and fche three-quarter-mile jn 17min. 17secs. A determined sprint at the end failed by 8 2-5 seconds. The attempt on the 100 yards record by Rika Simon, Maori champion of New Zealand, against the Hawke's Bay champion, R. Watkins, cansed even greater excitement. The pace was a 'eracker' from the start, Watkins being passed easily in the last lap by the swiftly-moving Maori, who, however, did the distance in 56- 2-5 seconds, a time he has previously made on fouf occasions. Competition was keen in the club raees of the evening, the swimmers taking advantage of the mildest conditions with which they have been favoured for some titne, and recording times that were well up to Standard.
