Work Done in Waipawa County 'RAIN DAMAGE REPAIRED

WAIPAWA, This Day. The following is the monthly report submitted by the engineer Mr V. E. Douglas, at the monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council. — Waipawa Riding — Metalling work on Argyll, College and Hickey's roads completed. The metalling authorised on the Kereru road between Wathan's and the Hawke's Bay County boundary has been done. Brassington's road, Tikokino, was metalled, and grading work was done on Smedley road, Brassington's road, Holden's road and Te Onepu road. Posts erected by the Railway Department at Pukehou were painted white. Clinton Riding. — Mill road and Milne's road were ' cleared and made good after the heavy rain of January 16 and a slip on unformed road at Clinton was cleared. A gocd deal of general work in clearing culverts was carried out. Takapau riding. — The Takapau footpaths were cleared and patched before Christmas. It is hoped to corameuce the metalling of Rangitoto road within a few days. Work on Bridges. Balfour's bridge. — A small amount . of erosion of the new embankment took place during a liood on January 16. The river is at present tending to bit this side, and it is intended to piotect the till with a stone and wire mesh apron. Tikokino Bridge. — The const: uction of this bridge has been completed. Some trouble was expei'ienced by the contractbr during ; the Christmas holidays, but this was apparently successfully dealt with. The tiliing in of the approaeiies will 'now be proceeded with. O'Callaghan's Bridge.— The contiactor expects to commence work on this bridge within the next few days. Carlyon's Bridge. — After considerable delay work was recomnfenced on this bridge. Trouble with water in ' the foundatio ; was experieuted but has' been oveixome and the bridgie is now, practically complete. Mill road (Clinton; washout. — The proposals for this work were approved ■by the Public Works Depaitment .with minor ameiidments and tenders for tho erection' of the retaining wall havq been called for this meeting. Gorge Bridge' (Ashcott Waipukurau road).— The 'alterations to oiie end of this bridge with the object of impjoving the approach have been compieted. It is intended to build up the outside of the road on the turn so as to improve driving safety. liepairs to the abutment have also been compieDed. McLeod' s Bridge. — The contractor has oommenced. work on this bridge. At the request of ' riding members a temporary bridge has oeen erected some little distance downstream and apjproaches bui(t to it. Considerable trouble with water is anticipated at McLeod's Bridge and it bas been suggested that the present desjgn be replaced by a piled bridge. The matter is under consideration.. The Main Roads. Main highways- — Tenders for tho supply of metal for the reconstruction of mile each .of the V/aipawa, Ongaonga and Waipa wa-Pourerere main highways preparatory to seahng next year, havi been called for tbis meeting. The proposals have been ap pioved by the Main Highways lioard. Napier-Palmerston State Iligiiv/ay - Patching with red metal and premix have been carried out on numtrous occasions and in addition edges have been built up as required. Waipawa-Tikokino main highway. — • "General maintenance and patrirng work was carried out. The i wo-Miio Creek flooded and broke into its old bed during January, causi'ng some damage to the hlling. A bank ' revetted with sandbags has been built to prevent a recurrence of this trouble. Waipawa-Ongaonga main highway.— The metalling of the Ruataniwha I'iats stretch was completed. Orusbed inetal as a running coat was spread by the council's lorry. More metal is requiied as a running coat, and it ,may be necesSary to provide binding for portion of. this stretch which is not settliog down. Takapau West . main highway. — The 6ealing was satisfactorily completed in this section.
