Parsons, A. W. S. Longley and C. R. Edgecombe. The county clerk, Mr J. W. Elliott, and the engineer, Mr J 0. McLauclilan, were also present. Mr C. J. Nairn, Pourerere riding inember on the council, wrote tendeiing| his resignation, on account of illhealth. The resignation was accepted with regret. The returning officer was instructed to-take the necessary steps to fill the' vacancy. The council decided to send a letter to Cr. W. H. Kittow expressing the hope of his speedy return to health. The council decided to join the other local bodies concerned in sending a letter of appreciation to Mr W. E. Yates, traffic inspector, who is being transferred to Whakatane. Mr "A. Jones was appointed to the position of caretaker at the Porangahau cemetery. Mr V. Windle, in a letter asking that a permanent roadman he appointed to the Cook's Tooth road, Porangahau, stated that, when bringing in a load of lambs to the last sale the lorry driver had stopped and unloaded at one bend which the driver considered might be unsafe, but even so 10 lambs had been lost by suffocation'. The engineer reported that he had inspected the road since the receipt of the letter and he considered it to be in good order. Councillors considered that the loss of sheep must have been due to overloading and not to the bad road. The engineer was instructed to make an inspection of certain gates which it was claimed were unsuitable for the passage of heavy lorries. The council decided to advise Mr H. M. Christie, M.P., that the attitude of the Patangata Council had been that they wer noet vitally interested in the matter of rlver control in Central Hawke's Bay, as they already had a Rivers Board operating satisfactorily in the section which concerned them. They had made no comment as regards the necessity or otherwise of the proposed survey.
