AUCKLAND, This Day. Owing to the illness of the chief engineer, the Government steamer' Matai, with the Govemor-General,, Lady Galway and family aboard, returned to Auckland unexpectedly late last night. The Matai, whieh was on a crtilse of the northern lighthouses, was anchored' at Bon Accord Harbour, Kawau, when Mr. W. Peterson became ill. Fearing appendieitis, Captain "Burgess orderpd thc immediate return to Aufekland, flM steamer arriving in port at 11.90. A new engineer was secured and thc vessel sailed at 12.45 for Moko Hinau direet. By steaming all night Capta*) Burgess hoped to maintain his sehodule.
