Monthly Meeting of Council

WAIPUKURAU, Last night. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held yesterday, Mr. A. C. Russell presiding over Crs. M. Tansey, A. W. Elliott, W. T. Edgecombe, J. Swinburn, and L. M. Monckton. The clerk-engineer, Mr. R. B. Price, was also present. "The Government having authorised local bodies to revise contracts to xneet che higher wages costs due to iegisiation we apply for an increase on the Waipukurau contract twhich has just been completed," wrote Messrs. Mattbews and Kirkby. "The increased wage cost is £17 5/- . . . . Our wages hook can be submitted to you for examination should you so desire." "As you are aware Traflic Ihspector W. E. Yates will soon be leaving tne joint Hawke's Bay counties to take up a position with the Main Highways Board, ' ' wrote the Hawke 's Bay County clerk. "It has been suggested that he be presented with a letter of commendation and appreciation of his services under the seals of the eight counties in his district." The council agreed to the suggestion. Mr. H. M. Christie, M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter from the Minister of Public Works, declining to take any further action in eonnection with thi* survey of the. Tukituki and Waipawa rivers owing to lack of support ,by the local bodies. Crs. Monckton and Tansey expresseo the opinion that £1000 was too mucli to spend on a survey. The formei stated that, if the proposal had been to spend the same sum on practicaJ work, something would probably have been done. * The. letter was receivbd. ,
Engineetr's Report. The engineer presented the following report; — Hatuma Riding: Trucks have been engaged eight days on the Waipuku-rau-Matamau highway and 226 cubie yards of maintenance metal were delivered. Lower Gorge, Marakeke,' and Rangitoto xoads were patched, a total of sixty yards being used. The power grader has worked five days on main highways and two and a-half days on riding roads, raking in shingle. Au underslip on Ngahape road was strengthened and repaired, the materiaJ being taken from a .bad corner near Miss McRae 's. Mount Herbert Riding: The mOtalling on Nicholl's road has been completed and application has been made for the subsidy. The unsealed portion of the Porangahau highway was patched with red metal and 104 yards of river shingle delivered. The trucks are at present engaged on Farm road on minor repairs and building a stopbank to prevent erosion near Bennett's. The power grader has worked three days on main highways and one day on riding roads. Purimu Riding: The contractor is makjng fair psogreste with the metallmg on the clay section of the Tou-rere-Whefcukura road, a total of 580 yards being delivered to the end oi the mouth. Robinson's Hill and Hamilton 's road have been patched and minor slips have been removed. Overhanging . scru,b has been cut from. corners on Ngahape road and a furthei depowt of xubbish was removed froir Stratford 's Bridge.
