Record Day at PetaneEskdale Meeting LARGE ATTENDANCE For some yeare after their xnauguration t>e joint Petane and Eskdale pxcnic and sports meetings veered between Bay Vxew (formerly Petane) and Eskdale, being held in alternate years at each place. For the last few years, ixowever, the sports have been held at Eskdale, but this year the Bay View folk decided to try to arrange for the meeting to be held at thexr place. Fortunately Mr F. Tucker came to the rescue with an offer to lend his pqddock fot the sports, and no more suitab'le ground could have been found; it was all flat, and just off the main road. The large body of officials from the two places worked with a will in laying out the ground for the horse events in one paddock and running, cycling and dancing events in another paddock alongsxde. The weather was beautifully flne, being a nice blending of summer and autumn. The attendance was the largest for a great many years, and spectators were txeated to a programme of such varied attractions that the interest in the sports was well maintained froin 11 a.m. until nearly 6 p.m. National-dancing events appeared for the first time on the programme and were a great attraction, the dancing platfoxm being surrounded all day. Tha running nnd cycling events attracted good fields and resulted in close finishes. Mr C. C. Smith 's cup for most points in these events was won by J, Hutchinson. The sheaf-tossing and the two foot-ball-kicking events, always a strong feature of this gathering, again drew large entries, and in the place-kicking (41 entries), Mr S. A. McKenzie (Hawke's Bay's sole Rugby representative selector) selected the right place to kick from and fhe right allowance to make for the slight wind and dropped three splendid goals with three kicks. The local officials were assisted in the yunning, cycling and dancing events by outsido officials accustomed to the running of these events, but all of the iiiany who took part in arranging and carrying through the very fine programme are to be congratulated upon the result. tA dance waa held in King George'a Hall (Bay View) in the evening, and this also was very largely attended and was a great success.
