CHARLES LAUGHTON TO BE PRODUCER
Charles Laughton is to become a film producer. He will be associated with an . independent company which he and Erich Pommer, the German producer, are establishing. They will start work after Mr Laughton has finished "I, Claudius," whea hie contract with Alexander Korda, of London films, expires. Mr Pommer and Mr Laughton will produce tbree or four pictures a year, and Mr Laughton will act in two of them. They will make their films at Mr Korda 's studios at Denham. Erich Pommer has just completed "Fire Over England" at the Denham studios, and is now making "Troopship. > ' Mr Laughton said: "I have always wanted to have a finger in film production. Several offers on theeo lines have been made to me, both in England and Hollywood. "We do not expect to start production until after March. So far we have not decided on any subjects; at least I don 't think we should talfc about them until we are ready to start. But we intend to produce moderu stories. "I have always had a great admiration of Pommer. He made nearly all the great German films — things like 'The Last Laugh,' ' Vaudeville,' 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,' 'The Walta Dream, ' ' Metropolis, ' 'Dr. Mabuse, ' 'Congress Dancee,' and many others." It is expected to start "I, Claudius" in the near future, with Josef vod Sterfiberg directing for Mr Korda,
