INTER-HOUSE SHIELD TO HUNTS'
Spectacular Women's Sports in Hastings
QUARTER-POINT MARGIN
By the slender margin of a quarter of a point tho Alexander Shield was wrested by 'Hunt's at tho second Hawke's Bay women 's inter-house sports meeting conducted by the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Clu,b at Nelson Park, Hastings, last evening. Though last year's meeting was acclaimed one of the outstanding open-air fixtures in the history of the town, last night's meeting was even more succesisful, and fully 2000 spectators were afforded a truly wonderfu] night. Apart from the increased attendanca the competing teams, though equal in number to those of last year, even showed an appreciable improvement in their general appearance and in their performances. Competition was exceptionally keen, it being obvious that the competitors had put in assiduoua training over a considerable period. The grand march, headed by the Hastings Citizens' Band, waa a spectacular feature of the evening and evoked nnrestrained applause, the nine teams in their colourful and attractive costumes marching past the assemblage of Ispectators with a precision that called for unbounded adiniration. The various events that followed were conducted in a true competitive spirit, the atmosphere of healthy rivalry being enjoyed by the spectators as much as the competitors themselves. Profiting from the experience of last year, the programme was slightly alte:ed and a change waa effected in the awarding of points, the maximum for the physic&l drill and marching being increased from 20 to 100. In view of this it was surprising that the championship shield should rest on so slim a margin. Every event materially affected the result, and the final count was as follows: — Hunts, 244.6pts, 1 Westermans, 244.35pts 2 Roachs, 213.6pts 3 Woolworths, 212.25pts. ........... 4 McKenzie 's, 206.75pts 5 Bon Marche, 183.35pts ^6 Bairds, 182.8pts. 7 Watties Canneries A, 176.75pts ... 8 Wattiea Canneries B, 171.35pts. ... 9 The meeting was excellently conducL ed, the three'hours programme being staged without any delays, every minute being one of sheer enjoyment. There were two protests, oue being upheldj and in this regard the final award had a material effect on the ultimate fate of the Shield. The reeord stewards had actually completed their work and awarded the shield to Westermans, the winners of laJst year's meeting, when a dispute arose concerning tho .belated announced results bf the novelty sack race, the last event on the programme, 4n whicb the second award was in dispute. After consideratiott the disputes committee placed Woolworths second, the judges having omitted them from the placings, and reduced Roachs and Westermanis from second place to third place equal. This reduction of four points, as far as Westermans wfero concerned, proved disastrous. The results of! tho various events were as follow: Grand Mafch (maximum points 20).— Hunts I7pts 1, Watties Canneries B 16.75pts McKenzIeS 16.25pts 3. He voiced speeial thanks for the | serviees given by the Hastings Citizens' | Band, who, despite having to devote the greater part of their time to praclice for the forthcoming band championsliip c-ontest, had given up manv lioura to the club and to the teams. In a few well-chosen remarks Mr A, E. Mctvor handed over ihe championsldp shield to tho leader of Hunts' team, Miss J. Barden, and the speeial trophy donated by Mr W. Taylor for the best leader was awarded to Miss l D. Davis, of Woolworths.
